We use our phones for almost everything – messaging, scrolling, gaming, working and watching videos. But have you noticed that your wrist or thumb starts hurting after spending a long time on your phone?
Your phone may not be the only reason for the pain, but the way you use it can put repeated stress on the hand, thumb and wrist. Gripping the phone too hard, constantly tapping your thumb in the same place or a bent wrist for long periods of time can all result in discomfort over time. There are some simple things you can do in your daily phone use to help cut down this strain.
Using a smartphone involves many small, repeated movements. Repetitive movements over long periods can fatigue or irritate the muscles, tendons and joints of your hand and wrist.
Everyday habits that can lead to wrist discomfort include:
You may feel soreness, stiffness, pain in your thumb or fingers or pain when you grip your phone. Some people may have other symptoms like numbness or tingling.
Everyone can have different pain in their wrist or hand from overuse of their phone. You can sense it after lots of scrolling or typing or when you use your hand in certain ways.
The common symptoms are:
You may have a mild pain that goes away after you rest or change how you use your phone. But if the symptoms don’t go away or get worse, don’t assume your phone is the only culprit.
Hand and wrist pain can happen for many reasons. If you use your smartphone often it might cause strain but it is not always the main cause. Other possible causes are:
Numbness, tingling, swelling, weakness or pain that won’t go away can be signs of an underlying condition. If you continue to have symptoms even after reducing phone use, it is best to visit an orthopedic specialist to know the actual cause.
Think about how often your thumb moves when scrolling through social media or typing messages. One swipe or tap doesn’t seem to matter much, but doing the same thing over and over for a long time can stress the thumb and the tissues around it. Not that normal use of a smartphone is going to hurt your hand. However, if the same movements are repeated for hours every day they can lead to soreness or discomfort for some people.
You do not necessarily have to stop using your phone. Instead, try changing the way you use it.
Occasional discomfort after prolonged phone use may improve when you change your habits and reduce the activities that aggravate it. But don’t lay the blame for persistent or worsening pain on your phone. Wrist pain may be related to tendon issues, nerve compression, arthritis, past injuries or other conditions.
If the pain continues or is accompanied by numbness, tingling, weakness, swelling or difficulty using your hand normally, you should seek medical advice. It’s important to know what is really going on to get it treated correctly.
